A real estate agent becomes a Realtor if he or she is a member and part of the National Association of Realtors, The Voice for Real Estate which is basically the world’s largest association when it comes to this profession. The term itself is a collective membership mark that is already registered so that people can identify real estate professionals that are affiliates of the said association. These professionals are also subscribed to the NAR’s strict Code of Ethics.
NAR was founded last 1908 and has grown from its original 120 member to its current 720,000 members. The association is mainly composed of different commercial and residential realtors who are salespeople, brokers, appraisers, property managers, counselors and so on. These members usually belong to one or more of various 1,700 local boards and 54 territory and state associations of Realtors. NAR itself is open to people who are interested in joining one of the many societies, councils and institutes. Aside from that, NAR also provides its members the opportunity to become active in terms of appraisal and international real estate sections.
Realtors are basically tied to the strict Code of Ethics as well as Standard of Practice. The NAR offers a lot of professional development as well as research and exchange of information between its members, the public and the government so that they can preserve the free enterprise system together with the right to own real property.
