The images of owning recreational property may include jumping off a rope swing or diving off a dock into clear cool water. Boating, swimming, fishing and lounging await you just outside your door – just a stroll from your porch. This is a great picture; I can see myself in it. I can see future grandchildren coming to visit. (No hurry son and daughter-in-law, really.) However, this is not the only way to have fun at the lake. I propose a good time can be had by all.
If you enjoy water sports and fishing, much, if not all, of your day is spent on the water. If you or someone in your circle of friends has an R.V. or if you have rented one you know what a great home base they can be. Starting with one R.V., add a few families; a few tents; one contained fire pit; and one flat space – you have a village.
This village can go anywhere, for example, you could be close to Sugar Valley Lake just south of Mound City, Kansas. If you owned a parcel there, early one morning you could launch your boat at the boat ramp; please lock the gate behind you. It would be a five minute drive, passing first the recreational area and tennis courts and then Seven Acre Lake and a small portion of the southern tip of Sugar Valley Lake itself. Fishermen can catch bass here up to seven pounds or more, some may want to time their visits to take part in bass tournaments held between May and October.
Hunters can arrange hunts on private and public lands throughout the area. Guides are available in both Mound City and Pleasanton just a few minutes’ drive away. The area is known for its turkey hunting.
In a single week, or extended weekend in the fall you could hunt turkeys, enter a bass tournament, drive less than 90 minutes, with traffic, to eat bar-b-que and see the Kansas City Chiefs. Each night you could be home in your village.
Hard to believe I know, but this might not be for everyone. Some people may prefer to lounge on the lake on rafts and inner tubes or lay out on the beach. Some people combine these activities and talk about wishing they had remembered their tennis racquets. Some people also water ski, wake board and generally romp around at high speeds. Many people enjoy maple sugar candy made from local Sugar Maple trees. These activities also have their appeal.
I have the flat space, 95 feet by 100 feet, right there in the Sugar Valley Lakes subdivision, Land Sales Company ID#1390. Keys to the boat ramp and access to the recreational facilities can be yours; the subdivision has eleven lakes and a nine-hole golf course. All you need is a down payment of $59 and be prepared to pay $76.87 per month. The home owner’s association fee is a bargain given what they provide and is $144 per year.
On a final and more personal note, you may have noticed that a par three golf course was given less attention than fishing, lounging, nearby hunting, boating, swimming and eating maple candy. I just find those activities more exciting than golf.
